The Maurice Huggins Room in Victoria Gardens has opened as a hub for creative activities and meeting room available for private hire, following refurbishment by Saltash Town Council.
Saltash Creative Space (SCS) is a new community project led by local artists and designers Chloe Birnie and Sue Newell, supported by Community Enterprises PL12. Together they are transforming the once neglected building into a busy focus for art clubs; craft workshops including print making, felting, knitting, quilting, weaving, rug and dress making; a toddler art club; and creative displays – all with café facilities.
A Toddler Art Club runs every Monday morning, and a growing programme of events is bringing in people attracted to the various creative activities. In the first six weeks there were nearly 400 visitors. The SCS aims to teach new skills and create a centre for creative learning, community support, intergenerational skills sharing and promoting a ‘make do and mend’ attitude. You can follow developments and contact Chloe at www.facebook.com/SaltashCreativeSpace.
The Maurice Huggins Room is being managed by Community Enterprises PL12. When not being used by the arts project (10am – 2pm, Monday to Friday) it is available for public hire as a meeting room with kitchen facilities, with transport provided by the Saltash Hopper Bus if required. Bookings can be made at 4 Fore Street, either in person or by phoning 01752 848348.
